In 2010, Barry Lay organised a chair making course for 6 people extending over several weeks.  As the chairs neared completion, Max Jensen led the way with instruction on upholstery techniques.

Chair Making Course

Each year we conduct a raffle which is drawn at the close of our exhibition at the Eltham Festival.  The prizes are made entirely by members and are always stunning.  First prize is a carved and painted rocking horse - very popular with all age groups.  Another popular prize is the doll’s house with beautiful fretwork furniture.

The scroll saw group prepare small animals for distribution with the raffle tickets and sometimes simply as giveaways.

Preparation of Raffle Prizes

Our Annual Exhibition is held in November in conjunction with the Eltham Festival.  It is an opportunity for members to showcase their projects.  It is a non competitive event with the only award being the Bob Crumpen Award for a piece made from Red Gum.  Members and visitors vote for their favourite piece for this award at the Opening of the Exhibition.

There are usually approximately 300 entries which range from miniatures to full dining suites, from novices to experienced.  Members enjoy seeing each other’s work and much discussion is had on the various techniques used in construction.  A number of entries are for sale and we also have a Sales Table for immediate sales.

Each year at our exhibition we run Uncle Wes’ Workshop.  This is an activity for children aimed at giving them an opportunity to try woodwork.  The item is prepared before the exhibition and only requires minimal assembly on the day.  To date we have made a battleship, a small toolbox/carry box, an acrobatic clown, a biplane, a periscope and a Christmas tree.

There are demonstrations by members throughout the weekend which include scroll sawing, turning, pyrography, guitar making, violin making, marquetry and carving to name a few.  We also have a variety of guest demonstrators who give their time to share their expertise and passion for woodwork.

The climax of the weekend is the drawing of the Club Raffle.  Members have sold tickets individually and also at local shopping centres.  All of the prizes have been made by members and are of a very high standard.
